European Quartet One Melody

The Lednice -Valtice complex could be called the Versailles of Moravia, only it was not a French nobleman who lived here but the princely Lichtenstein family. It is made up of extensive romantic landscape with two beautiful chateaux (Lednice and Valtice), chateau gardens, pavilions, fountains, parks and fishponds. The whole complex with an area of 300 km² is regarded as the most extensive man-made area in Europe. This is the only case in the Czech Republic when cultural landscape is recorded on the UNESCO list.

Its form was based on the conventions of English parks and provides a meeting place for Baroque architecture with the Valtice Chateau building modified in the neo-Gothic style, and follies such as the Greenhouse, Hunting lodge, Minaret, Apollo’s Temple, Fishpond Lodge, New court, Border lodge, Temple of the Three Graces, Jan’s Castle, the Obelisk and Rendezvous, all in the Romantic style. Whereas Valtice Chateau became the Lichtenstein family seat, the chateau in Lednice was used mainly as their summer residence. Valtice Chateau stands on the site of a Gothic castle and nowadays boasts neo-Gothic conversion work in the style of the Tudor Gothic. The interiors also gained a neo-Gothic appearance with superb examples of varied carved decorations. The spiral staircase in the library is worth a look, as is the coffered ceiling from linden in the Blue Hall, relief work of the tree of life from ivory and the marble fireplaces.
Points of Interest
In the complex of Lednice Chateau, which is also neo-Gothic, you will find the highest minaret outside of an Islamic country – nowadays it is used as a lookout tower. You can spice up a romantic visit to the complex by taking a boat trip along the Zámecká Dyje or take a ride in a carriage.
