The therapeutic effects of the
mineral springs here were known as far back as the 13
th century, with the first spa in
Mariánské lázně opening its doors in 1808. The spa specialises mainly in the treatment of
diseases of the locomotor system, the urinary tract and the kidneys as well as gynaecological diseases.
Courses of treatment are based on the use of natural resources – cold iron-rich acidulous spring water, natural CO2 gas and therapeutic peat. A true gem among the town’s buildings is the colonnade dating back to 1889, which was entered into the list of national cultural monuments in 2010. A dominant feature of the spa zone is the so-called Singing Fountain, which attracts visitors with its wonderful play of light and sound.
Points of interest
Mariánské Lázněbecame a popular location among the European elite during the 19
th century. At some point in time, the spa played host to the English King Edward VII who founded the second oldest
golf course in Europe here
. The Polish composer
Fryderyk Chopin and the German writer
J. W. Goethe also enjoyed visiting the spa. Chopin’s visits are commemorated to this very day by the
Chopin Festival where you can hear his melodies performed by leading international pianists.
