European Quartet One Melody

This tranquil town comes to life every year with the music of the composer, Bedřich Smetana, who was born here. The Smetana’s Litomyšl music festival is held in his honour. However it is not only music lovers who travel to Litomyšl, but also fans of architecture. The famous musician was born in the Renaissance Chateau which dates back to the second half of the 16th century, and is a unique example of the Italian arcade chateau.

Despite modifications to the interior, especially at the end of the 18th century, the chateau has still preserved its almost untouched appearance from Renaissance times, including unique sgrafitto decorations on the facade and gables. It’s recognition by UNESCO is official acknowledgement of its globally extraordinary importance.
Points of Interest
Litomyšl is home to the unique Portmoneum – Museum of Josef Váchal. The exceptional Czech writer, painter, graphic artist and carver painted the walls of the building with original motifs. This concerns a sort of Orbis Pictus of Váchal’s spiritual life and artistic opinions. Books and furniture which Váchal himself carved and painted can be seen in the museum.
Litomyšl is 161km from Prague.
