The Renaissance chateau in Litomyšl dates back to the second half of the 16th century, and is a unique testament to the Italian arcade chateau, which has preserved its original form until this very day. It is above all unique due to its well-preserved sgraffito decoration on the facades and gables as well as its original farm buildings and the chateau gardens.

Points of Interest
The eminent Czech composer, Bedřich Smetana, author of the famous composition Vltava from the My Fatherland cycle of symphonic poems, was born in the chateau in Litomyšl. Smetana was born into a family of brewers as the 11th child, but was the first son. This is why his father allegedly had barrels of beer rolled into the chateau courtyard from pure joy at the birth of his son. Nowadays, the international opera festival, Smetana’s Litomyšl, is held in the town every June.
