This region is the centre of Reformation in Hungary, where Debrecen, the city dubbed the “Calvinist Rome”, is situated.
In Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county there are almost 130 Reformed listed churches and historic buildings, many with a wooden bell tower of similar architectural value next to them, for example in Nyírbátor, Tákos, Tarpa and Csaroda. The unusual boat-shaped wooden grave-posts with carved faces in the Reformed churchyard in Szatmárcseke are the only ones of their kind in Europe.

Nagykálló is a Jewish place of pilgrimage as the wonder rabbi Jichak Eizik Taub is buried in the town. Not far from there, Máriapócs is a Greek Catholic shrine. The icon of the Madonna weeping on three separate occasions turned the small town into a truly holy place, which is today a Hungarian National Place of Worship.
