This town with a rich history, stretches below the famous Castle of Trencin. The buildings in the historic centre are parts of the Town Monument Reserve. The Roman military settlement, then called Laugaricio (today Trencin), was the northernmost point of the Roman legions of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the area of Central Europe. Proof of their stay is engraved in the castle rock dating back to 179AD and can be seen from the window of the terrace restaurant in the local Tatra Hotel.

Trenčín Castle was built on top of a steep rock and dominates the town and the region. Varied exhibitions, medieval games and attractive night sightseeing trips are organised at the castle throughout the year. The castle became popular, above all, due to its most powerful owner, the magnate Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, also referred to as the “Master of the Váh and the Tatras”. The fortified area called Mariánsky hrad or Mariánska hora spreads between the castle and town centre. It consists of the Roman Catholic parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It is accessible from the parish church by a sheltered staircasebuilt in 1568.

The originally Jesuit, later Piarist Monastery and Church of St. František Xaverský were built in the Neo Baroque style in the 17th century. The monastery is a classical music concert venue in the summer. The Town Tower offers a beautiful view of all the buildings in the town including the popular fountain and the Synagogue built in the Oriental style.

At present, Trencin is not only known as a historical town, but also for being a living and pulsating city which attracts many visitors, mainly during the summer time. The Slovak famous pop-music festival, Pohoda, and various international exhibitions (mostly concerning fashion) take place here, as does the International Film Festival “Art Film Fest” which is organised in Trencin, jointly with the spa Trencianske Teplice.
