Kremnica used to be one of the richest towns of the Kingdom of Hungary, and was also called the ‘golden town’ or ‘Golden Kremnica’. The royal mint was established here in 1328 and it is the oldest enterprise in the world which operates without any break. Large amounts of golden and silver coins were produced there, as are the Slovak Euro coins. Kremnica's ducats were highly praised for their quality and beauty.

Kremnica is a town where history can be felt in every street, house and church and each monument tells a story about its period in time. The town's historical centre creates a very unique and individual example of gothic urban planning. The central area of the town is the Stefanik´s Square home to the town castle and the Gothic church of St. Catherine, built in the 15th century. The pride of the church is the old organ with unbelievably wonderful acoustics, which can be heard at their best during the traditional summer event, the Castle Organ of Kremnica.

The oldest part of the town in general is the ossuary of St. Andrew from the 13th century. The gem of Stefanik´s Square is the bulky Baroque Trinity Pillar. In the north-western corner of the square is the mint building. The Museum of Coins and Medals is situated in an old burgher house in the southern row of houses, and offers more information about the craft of coinage and its tradition in Kremnica. Visitors can try minting coins with their own hands.
