The second biggest town of Slovakia is not only the centre of eastern Slovakia but also the core of the Eastern Carpathians where several ethnicities live. It has been the most important town of the region for centuries and a natural centre of trade, culture, and education. In 1369 King Ludovicus Magnus granted Kosice a coat of arms, making it the first town in Europe to use such a symbol on the basis of a royal armorial warrant.

There´s no need to go too far to see the beauty of this town as almost all monuments of Kosice are concentrated in the historical centre of the town. The heart of the town is the spindle-shaped Main Square, which is also considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Slovakia. The dominant of the square and the town is the monumental Gothic Cathedral of St. Elisabeth. It is the largest church in Slovakia.

In front of the northern walls of the Cathedral stands what was originally Urbans, tower built in the 14th century. The Urbans tower and the chapel of St. Michael, former charnel house which dates from the end of the 14th century, which stands in front of the southern side of the Cathedral of St. Elisabeth, together form a complete and unique set of Gothic monuments.

Once you are in Kosice, you cannot miss seeing the famous Golden Treasure of Kosice, which is exhibited in the East-Slovakian Museum (Vychodoslovenske muzeum). This unique collection of golden coins comes from 81 mints of Europe and the majority of coins are from the 15th to 17th centuries.
