Cake of Hungary 2016: The Green Gold of Őrség
Each year on Hungary's national holiday on 20th August, a competition to make the Birthday Cake of Hungary is announced by the National Guild of Hungarian Confectioners.

The competition has been organised since 2007 and is judged by a professional jury. Participants are expected to come up with innovative and creative ideas, which also reflect Hungarian confectionary traditions.

This year's winner is the ‘The Green Gold of the Őrség' created by the 2nd time winner, Gellért Szó, G&D Craftsmen Confectionary from Salgótarján. The cake is made of white chocolate loose ganache with pumpkin-seed butter and oil from the Őrség region of Hungary and raspberry jelly. If you are visiting Hungary make sure to visit a cake shop or café to try a slice.

Since 2012, also a sugar-free version is elected every year: in 2016, Blueberry Princess of confectioner Zsolt Pechtol of Tortavár Confectionary was chosen to be the best sugar-free dessert!
