Advent fairs in Budapest
The advent season is with us once again. This is actually a great time of year for experiencing a taste of what Christmas is like in another culture. From November until early January, the Christmas markets are great places to spend a chilly winter evening, perhaps tasting some traditional festive food and a little mulled wine to keep warm.

The largely Catholic population take the observance of the Sundays of advent fairly seriously and the church masses are very popular.  Though Hungarians are very hospitable, the grand Christmas meal is normally a family affair, so while you might not find yourself invited to a Hungarian family Christmas, there are still lot so options to experience the sort food and drink you might find there. As they are markets, you can also gather some great gift ideas too. Here is a rundown of the markets one can find in Budapest and its surrounding area.

Budapest Christmas Fair

Date: Gift stands: 28th November- 24th December 2014
Food stalls: 28th November- 31st December 2014
closed on 25th and 26th December 2014

Location: Budapest, 5th district, Vörösmarty Square
Website: http://budapestchristmas.com/christmas-market-on-vorosmarty-square

The longest running and perhaps the richest of all the Christmas markets in Budapest is a favourite with tourists due to its location at the end of Váci utca, and just a minute's walk from the Danube promenade. A wealth of Gingerbread, chimney cake and artisan's stalls await the warmly-dressed connoisseur.

Advent Fair at the Basilica

Date: 28th November 2014 - 1st January 2015
closed on 25th and 26th December 2014
Location: Budapest, 5th district, Szent István Square, in front of St.Stephen's Basilica
Website: www.budapestadvent.com

With a 200 Square-metre skating rink in the centre in pride of place, and fantastic 3D projection mapping that will make the backdrop of St Stephen's Basilica seem to melt and shift into different images, this is perhaps the most unusual of the Advent fairs. All the normal warming food fare is on offer, including a two for one mulled wine offer for those participating in the Budapest Winter Invitation promotion.

"Advent Budapest" Winter Festival at City Hall Park
Date: 28th November 24th December 2014
Location: Budapest, 5th district, Városháza Park along Károlyi Bouvelard
Website: http://www.adventbudapest.hu/advent-in-budapest

In its second year, the Winter Festival features a giant Christmas wreath and a gala opening, when the first candle, lit by the Mayor of Budapest himself on the first weekend of advent. The fair includes a heated greenhouse in the centre of the square, where Hungarian Christmas stories are told. This will be hard to understand, but the outstanding food and drink will speak for itself!

Advent in the Buda Hills (Advent a Hegyvidéken)
Date: 30th November - 24th December 2014.
Location: Budapest,12th district, Böszörményi út 23-25.
Website: http://www.viranyos.hu/ (Hungarian only)

Not actually very high up in the Buda Hills proper, this fair is easy to reach by bus or tram. In addition to the outstanding food and drink, great gift stalls and a range of Hungarian entertainment, there will also be an English Nativity show by the Helen Doron Early English group on Saturday 13th at 11:15.

3rd Annual Advent in the Palace Quarter
Date: 29th November- 22nd December 2014.
Location: 8th district, Horváth Mihály Square – Palotanegyed (Szabó Ervin Square – Kálvin Square)
Website: http://www.festumrendezveny.hu/ (Hungarian only)

This colourful fair in the rapidly-developing 8th district has lots to offer. There will be everything from artisan microbrew beers and spirits to handmade gifts, and many interesting events, children's concerts at the weekends and the appearance of Finnish Santa.

Creative Arts Fair

Date: 5-7th December 2014.
Location: Museum of Applied Arts, 9th district, Üllői Street 33-37.
Website: http://www.imm.hu/
This is where design meets art, at the fair of the applied arts museum in Budapest. The building itself is something to behold and makes a great setting for taking a closer look at the work of graphic artists and artisans as they prepare small decorations.

WAMP Christmas

Date: 7th December 2014, 10:00 am – 6pm
Location: Building "B", Millenium Park, Budapest, 2nd district, Kis Rókus utca 16-20.
Website: http://wamp.hu/en
This is perhaps the most market-like of all the Christmas markets. It is also thankfully indoors, which makes it even more conducive to wander for ages around the seemingly never-ending rows of textile, ceramic and wooden items for sale with a definite modern and alternative flavor. There is also a wealth of food items both as gifts or to enjoy as a break from shopping.

Király Street Christmas Market

Date: 29- 30th November, 6-7th December, 13-14th December, 20-23rd December 2014
Location: Central Passage, Budapest, 6th district, 8 Király utca.
Website: https://hu-hu.facebook.com/events/1480118215607033

On a historic street that runs from the centre of the city (Deák Ferenc Square) to the inner city ring road, that is now known as a trendy location to shop, you will find a great Christmas market with a strong range of gifts and goods. Easy to reach by tram or metro, but easy to lose yourself in!

Advent in Óbuda

Date: 29 November- 21 December 2014
Location: Budapest-Óbuda, Main Square and Óbuda Promenade
Website: http://adventobudan.hu/

This fair is quite a distance from the city centre, in the main square of the 3rd district, Óbuda (Old Buda) but there is plenty to see and it is often a little quieter than some of the other markets. As well as the great grilled meats and stuffed cabbage, there is an olden-days photo exhibition and a free ice skating rink in the centre of the fair (with cheap skate rental) which is open until February 1st.

Downtown Gourmet Street

Date: 1 December 2014- 1 January 2015
Santa Claus party: 6 December 2014
Location: Budapest, 5th district, Erzsébet Square
Website: https://www.facebook.com/events/314211778758277/?ref=22
Downtown Christmas (Belvárosi Karácsony), Erzsébet Square

This gastronomical Christmas event is part of a larger 4-month gastro festival in Elizabeth Park, at the very centre of the city, where a large number of farmers and producers bring their craft foods, such as preserves and honey, meats, wines and cheeses. A different theme is chosen for every month: November was for Goose and wine, December is Christmas food, so lots of stuffed cabbage, fish dishes and Beigli rolls. (January will focus on all sorts of pork products and February is for cheese.)

Whichever one you try, we hope you find everything you need for a very Merry Christmas.
